I was waiting for the most exciting part in Revenge of the Whale, the attack. It was a grueling moment but it was the best part. The whale was just staring at the Essex. Getting ready to attack. They didn't know that the whale had a grudge against one of the ship men. With a mighty blow of it's tail, it rammed into the ship. The ship began to become filled with salt water. The captain ordered all the crew members to begin lowering the life boats. The whale struck again, this time at the side of the ship with it's head. The story is based off of Moby Dick. The whale that attacked a boat. Or the Essex.
I really liked the book Revenge of the Whale. It was really descriptive and at points nerve wracking. I feel like I connected with it since I go to Nantucket during parts of the summer. I also really liked the book because I go fishing a lot with friends and family. The only thing I haven't experienced is having my boat sink because a whale hit the sides of it.

Honestly, I feel as the surface and any description given could not cover the amount of intensity in this book. Many people reading this novel were likely looking forward to the flick of the whales tail that created a real story, but I dreaded it. The entire time I was nervous for that one moment to change everything and to undoubted kill most of the shipmen. I had expected it yet my heart and stomach churned when it occurred. A moment which I can never forget no matter what is when in one of the boats, they draw to see who they will kill to eat. When Owen gets drawn, either his cousin or uncle, goes on to say "If anyone touches you I will shoot them." And yet, Owen agrees to giving his own life to keep those around him alive. To me this is such an incredible act of loyalty and sacrifice. That one scene in the whole book, made me so connected, to the story, to the characters, and to the hope they come out alive. I remember sitting on the plane on my way home from Colorado, crying my eyes out at this point. The woman next to me asked if I was okay and I nodded my head. She asked me what was wrong and I asked "How can people be so brave." And she replied with " I don't know they just are." That to me is a representation of this book. You can't understand how they managed to survive for as long as they did or how they kept that shred of hope with them. But they just are that brave.
I agree with everything Christina said. To add on... the authors sense of style was repetitive, and he explained way to much in the first couple chapters. Most things we already knew about water, and the sea and some other things he explained which got kind of annoying once and a while because i didn't want to listen to something I already knew about. But in time after the first couple chapters he began to stop describing everything. Nathaniel Philbrick was the creative author of this vivid book. One part of the book that i thought was the most loyal and brave was when Owen gets drawn to get killed. As brave as he is that showed an act of honesty and loyalty to his friends and family. As Christina said again all the quotes she put in. Another part in the book that was dramatic at the beginning is when the whale rams into the Essex not once but twice.

This book was very deep in the parts like were the men were starving. The details that got as intense as crying blood and having to pick lots on who they would kill and eat to survive allowed me to picture exactly what was happening. It also helped you feel connected to the book like you knew the people and felt things like sorrow or hope for them. another great part of the book was the chapter cliff hangers. I noticed every chapter ended in a suspenseful cliff hanger such as like Charlotte said the most exciting part of the book when the whale struck the boat. The chapter ended right after the impact of the whale hitting the boat. This book is good for people who like history and don't mind waiting for the good parts.
The authors style was very well written because you saw a lot of peoples actions and was very descriptive like calvin said crying for blood and he made you feel connected to the sailors as they died one by one by the un luck if the draw. The author did a job as describing the gory of the deaths but for me it was very predictable on who was going to die and live. In the first part of the book he kind of singled out the black sailors like when they joined the crew right after he said that he said some sailors don't come back from sea and he when they were in the boats he always said how the blacks were looking skinny and extremely dehydrated. But overall the book was well written and a suspense from time to time and I really enjoyed it.

I really liked revenge of the whale because of how epic and intense the situations in this book were. Most commonly stated, when the whale attacks as the crew is fleeing into the life boats and they're struggling to get the behemoth down. The way the story and hard ships of this young boy being sent off to be a crew member on ship is described let's you see how grueling his experience really was. I really can't connect with this book personally because I'm not a huge fan I sailing or boating, or having a giant whale crass into a boat i'm on for that matter. Just because I can't connect personally with this book, doesn't make me fell any less involved in the story.
This book interested me a lot because I've always wondered about the real story of Moby Dick. Some of the parts in this book are very intense like when the ship is getting attacked and when the crew are starving. This book also interests me because it is based so close to us. The story of Moby Dick is a really fascinating story and I know it's fake but the events I think were real. About the whale attacking the ship. The story is remarkable too because how the crew stayed alive through the ship sinking and the whale attacking. These men would risk there life to get this oil then lost most of it after one of the ships sank. The details make me feel like I'm in the book too. How they explain all the characters and the expressions are awesome.
The book Revenge of the Whale was a very creative and imaginative book. This book put you into to the spot of the action. You can image the seen and setting of this book, you feel like your part of the book. This book for the most part always had an exciting theme to it, there was ton of action packed into this book. The most action packed part of this book that I think that everyone else agrees with is when the whale drives it's head and body into the side of the ship and after a while cause the ship to sink. I liked this book because along with an exciting story line it had some history put into this book. This book put me through what the people had to do back in the day where there was little technology, and how hard it was to get get some of the resources they needed back then. This book really gave me a good view to put me back into the hardship of how hard it was to get some vital resources back when technology was not that advanced yet.

I thought the book was very interesting, informational, and an overall amazing story to learn about. Going into this book I had little to no idea about the Nantucket whaling ship story. Although I had heard a little about the book and the journey, but most of the book still surprised me! While I was reading this book I felt as if I was surviving with them, as if I was on the boat too. I found myself reading this book very quickly and with big interests. The book was very exiting, such as the moment when the whale actually attacked the boat, and other scenarios like if they should travel and land on the island of cannibals. I also thought that their strategic methods of travel and survival were really good. When I finished reading this book, I walked away with a great adventure in my memory.

In The Revenge of the wale by Nathan Philbrick, I noticed that captan Pollard was a terrible captan. Even thought he has the title I thought that the one making all the decisions was the first mate Owen Chase. For example, when the officers were first trying to decide what corse to take. He said that they should go to the marquesas, which were 1000 miles away. However The first and second feared that they would encounter cannibals( they would later become cannibals). So they headed for the chile coast about 3000 miles away. Also when they ran out of food. One person said that they should kill one of the crew and save there remains for food. Pollard approved of this idea, however regretted that when the lot land on his cousin. The crew would have been better of if he stuck to his guns.
In the book Revenge of the Whale I thought the author Nathan Philbrick did an excellent job with the Epilogue. He notes that Nantucket is now a posh get-away and abode for the rich and the idle. People come there to shop, to tour, and to learn about whaling. But Philbrick states that it is the "glorification" of whaling that is taught, not the kinds of things your read about in this book. Not only was this book interesting but is supplied me with some pretty cool facts. The average adult human would provide about sixty-six pounds of edible meat. And also a little bit of irony because of Coffin's last name being the first one to get eaten by the lottery that captain Pollard came up with. I like the way Philbrick describes their voyage (after the sinking) as "wandering the watery desert." I thought that it was just a great way of putting it.

in the book revenge of the white whale the author wrote about an attack from a whale on a whaling boat. though i enjoyed the story it was a bit to graphic for my taste. i do not enjoy reading about cannibalism or people being eaten. the author was very descriptive in describing how everyone acted and looked. the author could have done better having the sentences understandable it was confusing having words in brackets.
I totally understand your reaction to the graphic content of this book, but you must have noticed that right on the summer reading list I had a highlighted warning about the cannibalism in the book so students who did not to read about such horrors could avoid this title. As for the brackets around the words, this book is historical and based entirely on primary source documents. The brackets indicate words that the author had to change for fluency purposes.
The book Revenge Of The Whale was both captivating but terrifying. It shows how hard people can cling to life in the most dire situations, even if life means death for another. It was very educational and I learned more about whaling and ships in this book than anywhere else in my life. This book also shows how deadly the ocean can be. The book states that even those who have never left this island still know how dangerous it can be. But what most struck me about the book was the sailors will to survive. Even when they were tortured by dehydration and hunger, most of them refused to give up on life to the point where they were half mad and on the verge of death. They survived drifting at sea in awful conditions for 93 days, with only 60 or 70 days worth of food and water. I was also surprised at the drastic measures people are willing to take for their own survival, such as cannibalism and stealing food/water. like when Peterson tried to steal the bread. It also shows how hunger and dehydration can make a good man do things he never would do.
The book Revenge of the Whale is an action packed book that was very emotional and sad. I was very interested in learning about about the whaling history of Nantucket because I had heard much about it. I couldn't even emagine how much pain the crew member could have been in from lack of food to kill crew members for food. I felt that this was a very desperate act. I really enjoyed reading this book because it is amazing that anyone even survived the journey at sea and I liked reading how they did it.
One thing I noticed while reading the book Revenge of the Whale was how the first mate Owen Chase changed as a person over the course of the journey. He went from very controlling and threatening at the beginning of the book to supportive, encouraging, and protective of his crew by the end. When Owen chase and all of the crew first got aboard the Essex, he was kind of a bully. Owen Chase yelled at his crew members for even the slightest pause in whatever work they were doing. He also got mad when some one hesitated for only a second when they were answering one of his questions. Thomas Nickerson (the 14 year old cabin boy) got threatened by Owen Chase for just stopping his sweeping for a few seconds to look back at Nantucket as they were sailing away. Although Owen Chase started out a bossy, threatening bully, as the situation got worse after The Essex was attacked by the whale, he started to become more supportive and encouraging to his crew. Towards the end of the book when the situation looked pretty bad, the only 2 remaining members of Owen Chase's boat, other than himself, had both given up on life. He had to encourage them and tell them to have hope and to not give up. Overall, Owen Chase changed a lot as a person from the beginning to end of the book.
