I thought reading Chew On This was helpful because in part of the book it tells you how bad the food is for you. Also it tells you how little you get paid for working at fast food restaurants. One part in the book a employe explains how hard she word for a semester and earned very little.

I found the writing style of this book pretty interesting. There were a lot of facts but it was told almost as a story and I really enjoyed that. Most of the facts in this book were facts I didn't know which I also really liked. They weren't just basic facts a lot of people know or could find with a google search they were facts that took some investigating to find.
Even though that i didnt realy get scared by the facts about food I did get scared by many other things. One of the things the almost made mr=e throw up is when they were talking about the wast that the cows mad and the picture. The second thing that almost made e threw up was when he talked about that realy fat kid.
I think that this book really changed my opinion about fast food. One part that made me sick was about the cows waste. Another part that changed my opinion was was how little workers get paid. I thought that if i worked at a fastfood place it was enough money to get by but it barely is enough to get food to eat. I think this book is good at convaying the idea that the fast food indestry is bad for the world. This book made me stop going to fast food places all together, I used to go to mcdonalds once in a while and i knew it was bad but i needed somthing to convince me not to go and this did it.

Charlotte Penn........This book I particularly found very astonishing because many of the facts were a total suprise. For an example how many years ago the fries used to be fried in beef fat. This caused a huge controversy because vegetarians may have been eating the fries that have been fried in beef fat. One of the other things that made me think a bit about the pst was how all the fast food industries got started. It made me think about why would they do harm to humans for money, but actually the business runs off of the people that buy the product. It is up to the people to make decisions on what they are buying and eating. I really enjoyed reading this because when I read it, it made me feel a bit uneasy about what people were eating and why. One thing about this book that I liked was the back stories of the other families and children that were effected by the fast food industries. This book shows what companies will do for a quick buck.

Chew on this was a really interesting book. I liked how it explains throughout almost the whole book how bad fast food restaurants are in many ways. Such as how they treat their workers such as no promotion even if you work hard just because they don't want to pay them. Also all the bad stuff they put in their foods and all the animal abuse. But then in one of the last chapters they show you how good they could be with two restaurants that have better food and treat people better. So it first convinces you to stop eating at these places and then convinces you into trying to help make them better.
One part of Chew On This I really found interesting was the part when the author explained what artificial flavors are. Its crazy how they use so many crazy chemicals to make something taste exactly what its supposed to taste like. I think this would be a crazy job, having to put the exact amount of chemicals together to form artificial flavors. One of the facts I remember is how the author said that if someone wanted to, they could make that book taste like chocolate. That really blew my mind. This chapter was one of my favorite in the whole book.
I also thought that part was interesting that they could make anything taste like anything by only putting a couple drops of chemicals. I also like the authors description of all the flavors.
I really enjoyed the facts that we learned and also the authors writing style. These facts really gave me a lot of information about how fast food is so bad for you and people all over the world. This is bad for people in the world in a couple ways. One is that it is bad to eat and you can easily become obese with eating too much. But also the workers get beat up. For example people that work in the slaughter house it is possible for them to become very badly injured and or even killed. I found the authors way of writing interesting because you could easily tell he was trying to state his opinion. But at some times this could have been a bit too much. I think this because he only had facts about the bad stuff that happens and I don't think one fact about something good. I liked this because he really wanted to tell others to pick better choices and not food from these fast food restaurants!
This book opened my eyes to the dirty secrets of the fast food industry. I always knew that it was bad but not this bad. A part that opened my eyes was the chicken conveyor belt. Also when they told us there were bugs in our candy. And the part about the cows waste. I didn't know that workers were treated wrongly and payed small amounts. Also that food chains don't treat their animals with respect. This book really convinces you never to go back to a fast food restaurant. And I will never be going back.
This book Chew on this was full of facts about fast food that I already knew, but also full of facts that I was unaware of, which interested me greatly. The main area in which I lacked information about was the affect of the fast food and how it actually could ruin your life and cost you surgery. How fast food is more of a risk than people normally think. Basically everyone knows fast food isn't good for you, but we don't actually realize how bad it is for our health. I already knew how the meat companies raised their animals, and how they made their food, so that served no surprise to me. If there's really anything that I know for sure, it's that I'm not going to eat at a fast food place for a while. The little facts like how they used to make meat packers go to the bathroom near the meat due to lack of bathroom breaks really grossed me out. I've never been a big fan of fast food and I've always would rather have a salad than a big mac, so these facts did not greatly disturb me. Chew on this was interesting, but not as surprising as it may've been to others, to me.
I thought chew on this was an amazing book that altered my outlook and opinions about fast food. I never knew the origin stories of how these big fast food companies got started for example, Cornel Sanders getting his start by being a traveling salesman and eventually grasp on to the growing fast food trend. Or the McDonald brothers starting the revolutionary (In fast food standards) self service system. Chew on this really let's you know about all the things about fast food that the companies don't tell you. Since the only reason they don't tell you is because they want the customers to buy buy buy! For intense, McDonalds say that they get their eggs from a natural chicken farm. If a processing factory where they force chickens to lay eggs and keep them in cages, eventually to be served as a McChicken, then yes they're from a home grown farm.
I agree with you Thompson on everything except about changing my out look we all know that fast food is filled with chemicals and stuff that isn't necessarily good for us but we still eat it due to its convenience cheapness and taste.
The book chew on this really opened my eyes to the dark side of fast food. before reading this knew that it was not healthy and was not recommended but this was surprising. I liked that it showed how much fast food can change your life for the worse. Like one man had to get lipo-sucktion due to the fact that he ate fast food everyday. After learning where the food comes from I was a little bit socked to be honest. I heard thoughs rumors that taco bell had horse meat but I did not believe it but after hearing where other things come from i can believe it.
Before I read Chew On This I thought that fast food was a nice tasty treat to have on occasion. But after I read this book I do not see myself going into a fast food restaurant any time soon. I say this because of the section on chicken and beef. The chickens are stacked in tiny cages and urinate and defacate down on the chickens below them. The slaughtering is supposed to be painless but some chickens have an extremely painful time before they die. The places where they raise the cows run out of places to put the droppings so they put them in big piles which they cal lagoons, these lagoons are known to spontaneously combust. some of the droppings are just left and they en up in the meat. For these reasons I will probably never eat at a fast food restaurant again.
I believe that Chew on This was a very interesting read. Before I read this, I knew next to nothing about what fast-food really is and where it comes from. Now that I know all of these facts about how they treat the animals and workers, I no longer want to got near a fast food place, or eat fast food. I find how they treat the animals to be really disturbing. They cram all the animals into a very small space, and don't give them the necessary food to be healthy. They feed the chickens food that will make them fatten up quickly, and then kill them when they are only a couple months old. I really dislike the fact that the factories don't treat their workers fairly and how they don't pay them enough money for what they do.
Before reading Chew On This, I didn't really care about how unhealthy fast food was and ate it often. Now that this book opened my eyes, my look on fast food has changed significantly. Although I'm still going to keep eating fast food because of how cheap and convenient it is, I'm only going to eat it as a last resort now. I also found it wrong that chickens are put in cages for eggs and later slaughtered. Even the workers are treated like garbage at fast food chains. This book explained how wrong fast food was and how crazy it is that they're still in business. The worst part is that we're doing almost nothing to stop it. Until this book I had no idea how bad fast food was, I wasn't surprised at how unhealthy the food was but more surprised that the factories are not even questioned by America.
People can stop them by not buying their food! and demanding that our government impose some quality control over how the food is handled and how the workers are treated. Every time you go to one of those establishments, you are supporting their business practices, but that is entirely your decision. That is the nature of a free democratic society.
The book Chew on this was not one of my favorite books I've read for multiple reasons. One of the reasons I didn't really enjoy it was because it was boring. Books that interest me are books with suspence and action. This book had none of that. Even though I didn't really like the book that much there were still some parts of it that changed my view on fast food. One fact that completely changed my thought of fast food was that sometimes the cow poop got into the meat. So this book definitily helped me in a way that steered my clear of any unhealthy fats food resturaunts. For those reasons I didn't like the book at all
Although I was aware of the affects of fast food on the body, I had no idea they were so extreme until I read "Chew On This." One of the facts that personally struck me as interesting was that if all the hamburgers Americans eat per year were in a straight line, they could circle the Earth 32 times. Can you believe one in fourteen teenagers eat at MacDonald's each day? Occasionally stopping there in road trips once in a while, I never thought anything of it, considering the kid-friendly exterior and fun playground I always begged my mom to let me play on. I never asked myself why their food tasted so good compared to other restaurants. As the authors Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson pointed out, if a child is obese by the age of thirteen, there is a ninety percent chance they will be overweight at 35. This shocked me. However, I was particularly surprised by the section on "McJobs," which focussed on how the fast food industry treats their employees, and the answer is, not well. "McJob" was added to the dictionary in 1986, defined as "a low-paid job with few prospects, typically one taken by an overqualified person." This was just one of the examples that opened my eyes in this compelling read. Although I am not usually a fan of nonfiction books, I loved "Chew On This" and would definitely recommend it to future eighth graders for summer reading.
I could tell that the authors of Chew On This, Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson, believed wholeheartedly that McDonalds and all other fast food joints are awful, fattening, and should be eliminated from this world for good. This eye opening book had details that sometimes I wish I didn't read. Yet, in the end, I was happy that I was educated on this topic. Some major themes included obesity, animal rights, and even human rights. Obesity is a big problem in this world, and the authors Eric and Charles made sure we got that. The text on page 210 read, "They (fast-food meals) are the perfect meals for making you unhealthy." The authors want you to make the connection with fast-food and obesity... Fast-food=obesity. Another major theme in this book is animal rights. In graphic details, the authors explain how a chicken is killed before it is made into fast-food. Even more disturbing, sometimes, certain chickens survive the first step of slaughtering them-which is dunking them in a tank of electrified water to knock them out. The chickens, awake or dead, then go to a machine where it cuts their throat. If a chicken can still survive that, it soon suffers a painful death... which is boiling to death in water, which is called the scald tank. No chicken survives that. This is just not right for the chickens to go through that much pain and stress. The final theme is human rights. Mcdonalds does not treat its workers good at all. Once, a worker named Sadi started working at eight o'clock in the morning. At four when she was trying to leave, the manager wanted her to stay longer because of the shortage of workers that day. Very long story short, Sadi didn't get to leave until 3:30 am. Do you know what Sadi's present was for working so very long and hard? A bag of candy. That is not a way to treat a poor human being, making them work a nineteen hour day. There were many major themes in Chew On This, and all of them proved the authors' points'... Fast-food restaurants are not good for this world.
The book Chew On This was a very informational book. The author me that McDonald is evil. From the seducing kids interview to the garbage that they put tin there food. One part that I found interesting and gross was the cannibalistic chicken. Big food companies like Tyson and Purdue feed there chickens remains of the dead chickens. Another part that intrigued me was the legacy of Ray Crock. Even thought he wasn't the one who created McDonald he was the one who made it like it is today. He had this obsession over sameness and made sure that all his stores were the same and his food were the same. So he froze all the products that were to be soled at McDonald. The author was comparing him to Walt Disney and how they built there empires the same. However the most disturbing part of all of this was what his food did to people. It rots there teeth, and makes all sorts of body problems for its consumers. However they can't stop buying it because it tasted so good. Its actually design so you cant stop. These are the things that I learned from Chew on This.
The book chew on this was very interesting and had a lot of gross facts about fast food. It helped put in prospective where the food i like to eat came from and how it was made. however i didn't like how the book only mentioned other fast food restaurants in passing. that made me feel as though it didn't apply to the other fast food restaurants because they were not mentioned.

I thought the book Chew on This was very good at carrying the message the author wanted to send. The author's main purpose of writing this book was to get people to stop eating at fast food restaurants because of how bad they are for you. In the beginning of the book it talks about why fast food restaurants started. You see how they began as someone's dream job but then quickly turned into someone just wanting money and forgetting about the well being of the costumers. The quality of the food dropped and nobody seemed to care what they were serving. After reading this book I didn't want to go to any fast food restaurants again. In fact when my sister read this book she got all of us to stop going to McDonald's and we haven't gone since I was in fifth grade.
When I read this book I found the facts interesting but the way the book was set up was a little boring. I like a book with a plot and this book would just have a different plot ever chapter. This made it confusing and hard to really grasp everything that the book was trying to say. If you were to summarize the book it would be very hard because you wouldn't know what part to summarize. However this book still made a very big impact on the way I think about fast food. Even though it would take me hours to tell you everything I would want to tell you about this book I still found that when you do get the full message across it is very powerful.
Over the summer I read the book Chew on this. I thought this book was great and super fun to read. It was gross at times but very informational. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars because it opened up my eyes to what is healthy and what isn't. It inspired me to have a healthier lifestyle and not eat fast food as often. Also, I really like how there were some stories of different people's experiences with the process of making fried food because it really helped me understand the book topic a lot more so that I could relate to the book. The reason why I only rated it 4 out of 5 stars thought was because it was a little boring at times and the book could start to ramble on about something with so much detail that it was hard to read. Overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend reading it.
A re-occurring theme in the book Chew on This was the fact that fast food restaurants often take advantage of young, high school aged people. Fast food chains like to hire young workers because they are easily controlled and often don't know when to say no. The fast food restaurants are often run pretty much entirely by high schoolers. They wake up very early on days they don't have school, open up the restaurant, work a lot of the day, some until late at night. They then close up the restaurants and go home. If they do have school they still often work until very late at night, then get home and still have to do all of their homework and studying. The book explained how low of wages the workers get paid. Managers often give even the best of their workers low evaluation grades just so they can pay them less. managers also ask their workers to work overtime again and again so often times teenagers are at work until midnight or later on a school night when they have tests the next day. Most fast food restaurants really take advantage of their young, easily controlled workers.
I thought reading Chew On This was helpful because in part of the book it tells you how bad the food is for you. Also it tells you how little you get paid for working at fast food restaurants. One part in the book a employe explains how hard she word for a semester and earned very little.

One thing about this book that I liked was the back stories of the other families and children that were effected by the fast food industries. This book shows what companies will do for a quick buck.

ReplyDeleteI could tell that the authors of Chew On This, Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson, believed wholeheartedly that McDonalds and all other fast food joints are awful, fattening, and should be eliminated from this world for good.
ReplyDeleteThe book Chew On This was a very informational book.
ReplyDeleteThe book chew on this was very interesting and had a lot of gross facts about fast food. It helped put in prospective where the food i like to eat came from and how it was made. however i didn't like how the book only mentioned other fast food restaurants in passing. that made me feel as though it didn't apply to the other fast food restaurants because they were not mentioned.

ReplyDeleteI thought the book Chew on This was very good at carrying the message the author wanted to send.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this book I found the facts interesting but the way the book was set up was a little boring.

ReplyDeleteOver the summer I read the book Chew on this.
ReplyDeleteA re-occurring theme in the book Chew on This was the fact that fast food restaurants often take advantage of young, high school aged people.
